The Anonymous Email Lady (Short story)

“Honey, I am late for work... I have to run.”
Funke heard Wale’s voice. She was busy with the kids, getting them ready for school. Immediately, she dashed into the living room, but Wale had left for the office. A dejecting expression rented her face, but the voice of the kids awaken her back to reality and she snapped the feelings and return to the children who were set for school.

Finally when the children had left for school, she returned to doing the house chores.

Funke graduated from the University as the best student in her class and the second best overall at the Law school. She met Wale during her service year in Enugu and their love story started right then.
Wale is a computer Engineer for a leading telecommunication company in the country, he is so brilliant and intelligent and that earned him a rapid promotion and salary increment.

The comfortability made the couple reach a compromise of letting the wife out of work in order to take care of the children who are so young and to return to practice latter when they are old enough.

After 10 years of marriage, their marriage became dry and uninteresting. Wale is always busy spending much time at work, travelling for conferences and trainings all over the country, while Funke remained busy with the children, maintaining the home and making everything perfect for the family.

In between their busy lives, they lost their small but sweet moments with each other. She somehow accepted all these knowing that he truly loves her so much, but how could Wale forget what today meant also? - Their marriage anniversary.

When Wale got to work, a feeling struck him to be missing something today, but what? He tried to remember, balancing it between the day work and myriad of thoughts running across his mind. He got busy and the thought escaped him.

During lunch, an email popped up on his Tablet and he was surprised.

“Hi handsome, you look great today in the blue coloured shirt; please wear something like this always; #smiles”.

He tried replying to know who the sender is, but the mail failed to deliver, replying an error because the user does not exist.

“How could this be?” he thought within himself.

He checked the sender’s address and found out it was an anonymous email address which can never receive a reply.

He soon forgot about and returned to his busy work for the day.

The following day, at exactly the same time, he received another email from the sender reading “I am your greatest admirer, you are worthy to be celebrated and I want to be your friend”.

At this time, he was in high spirits but anxious. He wanted to reply, but again, it failed to deliver and gradually, it became a routine. He was receiving the emails daily at around the same time.

Without knowing, he started waiting for it every day. He would check his wrist watch and the screen of his tablet on several occasions. He came to know that the sender was a lady as she knew a great deal about him and was closely observing him secretly on a daily basis.

At a point, he thought maybe it was Clara, his secretary who used to dress seductively to work, smiling at him- her boss promiscuously, until she received a caution from him.

In one of the several emails, the lady mentioned that

“I know you have a family; happily married with two kids. It is something rare these days. I just want to get much closer to you like your jugular vein”.

Ever since he read that, he started spending much time with his wife and children.

Funke observed his sudden changes and decided to ask him what happened, but he could not tell her the real reason. He loves her and has been faithful to her and does not want to break her heart by letting her know that a lady crept into his heart through emails.

The surprising part is that the lady of the private email never gave her name and not even a phone call. She just wanted a mono-chat, ensuring her messages were appreciated and driven home.

At a point, he thought the lady might request for a financial help from him, but he was surprised that nothing of such happened.

As time passed, Wale kept receiving mysterious but romantic love emails from the lady. Sometimes he really wanted to talk to her or even send her a reply, but she remained anonymous.

One day, after a few months, the lady said in her email that she wanted to meet him. She sent him an address in one of the popular and expensive bar in the town. She described what her outfit would look like and the part of the bar she would be sitting- waiting for him.

At this time, Wale became excited but worried at the same time.

“I have not done anything wrong, so why should I be scared to meet her? But what if someone from the church or one of my wife’s friend sees me with another woman in such a public place?” he thought worryingly.

At lunch, he received a letter of permission from her secretary of her early departure from work that day and he granted her.

Immediately after work, he freshened up and headed straight to the bar.

She said she would be dressed in a blue gown; his favourite colour. At the sight of the colour, he became nervous; his heart pounded fast. He can see her from behind. She looks gorgeous from the side as he moves closer.

He went in front of her and his wife was sitting there, smiling and wearing his favourite blue colour and with a Birthday cake on the table in front of her which has on it;

“Happy 35th birthday Dear Wale- From your anonymous email Lady”.
